The Weekend Edit · from Newark
Lisbon, Thursday night to Monday
For two busy people who can leave after work and need the first morning in Portugal to count.
Flights
- Route we start with: EWR–LIS nonstop. TAP late afternoon (~7h) or United evening on a 787. Avoid one-stops via Madrid or Dublin unless the cash savings are large — they cost a vacation morning.
- Dates: Thursday departure, Monday return. Shoulder months (March–May, late Sept–Oct) beat June–August on price and crowds.
- Cash vs points: United miles or Chase UR via TAP/United if the saver-level award is there. If the award is 70k+ each way in economy, we usually take cash and save the points for a longer haul.
- Airline preference: United if you already have status or want Polaris on the way home. TAP if the fare is lower and you want the earlier Lisbon arrival.
Hotels
- Neighborhood first: Chiado / Príncipe Real for walking. Baixa if you want flatter streets and a tram at the door. Cascais only if this is a beach weekend, not a city one.
- Brand / points: We compare a Fora-perk boutique (breakfast, possible upgrade) against Hyatt / Marriott cash + points in the same pocket. A 15k-point night is interesting; a 40k-point night usually loses to a well-perked cash rate.
- Promos: Shoulder-season 3-night stays often include breakfast that a flash cash rate does not. We check both before we lock it.
- Book: 6–10 weeks out for a specific boutique. 3–4 months if it’s a holiday weekend.
Experiences
- Must-dos: One timed viewpoint or monastery (Belém / Jerónimos), a long lunch in Bairro Alto or Cais do Sodré, a tram or tuk-tuk only if knees or time require it. Leave Sunday morning unscheduled.
- Book 3–6 weeks out: Popular restaurants on Friday and Saturday nights. A food walk if you want a guided first night and don’t want to think.
- Book a few days out, or not at all: Pastéis de Belém, most miradouros, neighborhood wine bars.
- Skip: A packed five-neighborhood checklist. Four days cannot hold Sintra, Cascais, and a full city list without losing the weekend.
